Board Members

Terrie Ashby-Scott, MSW, Ph.D. Chair

Terrie Ashby-Scott is currently the director of the Spokane MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) Center, co-sponsored by Washington State University Spokane and Eastern Washington University.

The program serves traditionally underrepresented students, (students of color and girls) in broadening their knowledge and increasing their numbers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) professions and careers.

The program serves approximately 400 students in the Spokane Public Schools.

At WSU Spokane, she also serves as the Assistant to the Chancellor for Human Relations and has taught in the School of Social Work for Eastern Washington University. Terrie holds a BA in Speech Pathology, a Masters in Social Work from Eastern Washington University and a PhD in Education Leadership from Gonzaga University.

Terrie is a Gates Millennium Scholar and is an active alum for the organization. In addition to Odyssey Youth Center’s Board, Terrie serves on the board of directors of the Federal Defenders of Eastern Washington and Idaho. She has served on the boards and committees of the Second Harvest Food Bank, Women Helping Women, Diversity Child Protection Team, YMCA and the Inland Empire Girl Scouts Council.

Kelly Lerner, Vice-Chair

Kelly is an architect and an innovator in the fields of green building and sustainable international development. In 2005, Natural Home and Garden Magazine named her in its list of "Top Ten Green Architects" and she received the UN-sponsored World Habitat Award for her work introducing straw-bale construction to China. She has over 10 years of experience managing her own successful architecture firm, One World Design Architecture, and before becoming an architect, she worked recruiting, training, and managing volunteers for the Girl Scouts. She holds a Master’s Degree in Architecture from University of Oregon and recently authored a popular book for home do-it yourselfers, Natural Remodeling for the Not-So-Green House: Bringing Your Home into Harmony with Nature.

J.R. (Jeremy Rick) Long, Secretary

JR joined the Board in late 2006 and currently serves as Board Secretary. JR has been involved with OYC since late 2005 as a volunteer facilitator helping to monitor center operations one night each week and various other OYC events. In his professional life, JR has worked in the local banking industry since 1994. JR has been a Spokane area resident since 1974. He also holds a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Eastern Washington University. He is currently a Vice President, Project Manager with RiverBank, the first newly-chartered independent community bank to open in Spokane in nearly 20 Years.

Mary Maxfield

In 1963, when Mary Maxfield was just seventeen, she was in Mississippi registering African-Americans to vote at the height of the civil rights movement. Mary’s mother helped instill a passion for equality and social justice very early on. This passion has been the primary motivator for her activism and volunteer efforts. She is retired after 25 years as a human service professional from the Girls Scouts of the USA and Camp Fire Boys and Girls. In addition, the skills she gained running her own risk management consulting business are brought to bear in the successful management of Odyssey Youth Center.

Mary was born in Spokane, Washington and attended North Central High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Washington University in Biology and Physical Education. Mary has been an Odyssey Board Member for seven years. Mary is also current member of the Regional Steering Committee for the Pride Foundation.

Sandra Williams - Executive Director

On January 14, 2008, Sandra Williams joined Odyssey Youth Center as its fifth Executive Director. Sandra is an activist, writer, and filmmaker who brings a long history of experience addressing issues of discrimination, oppression, equity, and social justice. Sandra currently serves as the Spokane Field Coordinator for the Youth Suicide Prevention Program. Her work includes conducting education programs, community training, and workshops addressing adolescent stress, depression, and effective strategies for suicide prevention. Prior to that working with the Youth Suicide Prevention Program, Williams spent eleven years living in Los Angeles with her daughter Renika. While in Los Angeles, she attended graduate school, helped run a small production company, and spent two years as the Southern California Project Coordinator for the Gay-Straight Alliance Network. Working with GSAN, she supported the creation and development of middle school and high school GSA clubs across the region. In the early 1990s, Williams was an AIDS Prevention Educator in Eastern Washington. She founded and managed the Spokane office of POCAAN (People of Color Against AIDS Network) and was responsible for providing AIDS prevention and outreach programs in the area. She acted as a grassroots organizer and advocate and was involved in many important programs and projects impacting the LGBTQ community, including one with the Spokane Regional Health District, that ultimately resulted in the creation of our own Odyssey Youth Center!
